What is NDIS ?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme, NDIS, is designed by the Federal Government of Australia and made available to participants in 2013. The aim of the scheme is to provide adequate support to Australians that are living with a disability, their families and those who provide direct support to them. There are around 4.3 million people living with a disability in Australia. Only about 500,000 Australians access the services and supports they need so far, which gives the scheme more room for expansion. The scheme is designed to provide for Australians aged between 7 and 65 who have intellectual, physical, sensory, cognitive and psycho-social disability with the support they need. The NDIS supports participants to live as independently as possible acquiring all the skills and services they need to live as such.
The NDIS helps people with disability to:
- Have access to common services and resources, such as the health and educational systems.
- Have access to community resources and services, such as sports, clubs, civic organisations, and charities.
- Continue receiving informal assistance from loved ones and friends.
Who is eligible for the NDIS?
The NDIS scheme is accessible to people with a disability who:
- Are aged between 7 and 65 years.
- Live in Australia or having Australian residency or holds a permanent Visa or Protected Special Category Visa.
- Need support because of permanent and significant disability or cannot use special equipment because of permanent and significant disability.
What are the supports funded by the NDIS?
The followings are supports funded by the NDIS for Australians with disabilities:
- Behavioural support.
- Therapeutic support.
- Daily personal activities.
- Transport assistance to enable participation in social, cultural, economic, and daily life activities.
- Assistance with household tasks to enable participants to maintain their home environment.
- Vehicle modification.
- Mobility equipment.
- Home modification, design, and construction
What are the supports not funded by NDIS?
- Daily living costs that are not related to participant’s support needs.
- Services likely to cause harm or poses risk to other participants.
- Support not related to a person’s disability.
